WHAT WE DO

INDIVIDUALIZED VIRTUAL MATH SUPPORT FOR 10-14 YEAR OLDS

In a nutshell, Facets Learning provides virtual learning sessions in small groups catered to your child's learning needs. This is not math homework help. This is a progressive curriculum that can help your child jump up to 2 math grades in 12 weeks!

But HOW do we do it?

Facets Learning combines brain science with a different sort of mathematical task to give your learner tons of growth and confidence in themselves as a learner.

So what does this look like, practically?

Your student will meet with their cohort twice a week for 12 weeks.  Each session will last about 45-60 minutes and present a task that focuses on a big idea.  Students will work together, guided by the tutor, to solve the problem/task presented.  Students will have group roles, and collaborate to build their knowledge together.  The tutor will help students to work together, to think & talk deeply about the math ideas, and focus on a growth mindset.

GOALS:

  • Getting all learners through Algebra 1 by the end of 9th grade.

  • Difference in life and learning, not just grades.

  • Empower learners with self confidence that translates to everywhere

  • Take load/burden off parents knowing that Facets Learning can solve this problem (Half the battle is finding something that works that parents can implement.  Parents doing it all is a barrier.  We are here to support parents.)

OUR Method

Math is learned best in collaboration/groups of learners.  This also helps with job success because in work environments collaboration is key. The groups are intentional and beneficial.  More effective than one on one tutoring.

Mindset Work. Struggle is beneficial to learning, mistakes are necessary

Intentional Task Selection that maximizes learning and success, thinking skills for all levels.  Important to note:  this will not be worksheet based.

The best teachers. Experienced teachers who are attuned to students and committed to their success.

OUR VALUES

Equity & Inclusion

Math education in the US has been a driver of elitism and performance.  Too often it has been used to separate students into “smart” and “not so smart” categories.  This leads to growing inequities in the school system.  73% of math doctorates are male and 94% are white or Asian.  This math seeks to break down those barriers to empower ALL learners from ALL backgrounds.

Struggle

Struggle is the path to growth.  When you are struggling, your brain is developing.  If everything is easy, and there is no struggle, you aren’t growing. Additionally, when students have the idea that hard work and struggle leads to success in math, it acts as protection against the idea that some people are gifted at math.  This helps break down the elitisim involved.

Growth  Mindset

As you struggle, don’t worry, we got you! The most important aspect of growing is your mindset about it. We believe that EVERYONE can learn math at high levels, and we want you to believe that, too.  In time, you will believe in yourself.  After you believe in yourself, the sky is not even the limit.

Process

Grades are the least important part of math learning. In fact, I’d call them unimportant.  What is important is the learning process itself.  The process itself develops thinking and reasoning skill and develops learning confidence and curiosity.

OUR TEAM

Nicole is a 3rd generation educator with a passion for learning and insatiable curiosity. She holds a Masters of education degree and held middle school endorsements in math, writing, social studies, and science. Nicole was initially hired as a Talented and Gifted teacher and spent the duration of her teaching career as a TAG coordinator and advocate. She found additional funding for extracurricular activities for TAG students and developed lessons and extensions to challenge and enrich their middle school experience.

Nicole left the traditional classroom shortly after starting a family when it was clear that her son was a different sort of baby. She was grateful for the opportunity to stay home and raise him and soon her daughter while learning all the ways to best support a family of neurodivergents. Using this specialized knowledge to support students as she transitions back to an educator role is something Nicole looks forward to.

Macie spent 22 years teaching in a public school setting. She taught 6-12th grade language arts, social studies, math, and almost every elective you can think of! She also worked as a dean of students, curriculum coach, and was instrumental in developing her former district’s online learning program.

Macie left the classroom because she wanted to be more innovative and supportive to students and families than the public school system allows.

Macie’s passion has always been developing the struggling and disengaged learner. When you work with her, you start to believe in yourself and in your capabilities. She is an expert in differentiation and making learning accessible and enjoyable to all learners.  She is also excellent at attunement to students and their needs, and can gain the trust of even the most reluctant learner.

FAQS

Is this program like traditional tutoring?

The one-on-one tutoring model helps students with other goals. Facets learning is about enriching the learner’s knowledge and broadening their skill base through small group learning. With the help of peers and a Facets Learning Tutor, students will gain the mindset of a math learner. With their new confidence from success and growth, grades and–more importantly their learning–improves.

How will this help my child’s grade?

Facets Learning is not about helping with homework and filling in missing assignments. We strongly believe that students do well when they can. Building usable math skills and self-confidence will make a bigger difference in students’ experience than checking boxes in a grade book. We help our learners understand math and problem solving in ways that enhance other areas of their lives.

How do you challenge my gifted child to grow?

Small group learning with children at similar stage. (TAG kids can struggle with this idea because of perfectionism and it’s rare that in the average curriculum classroom situation it’s rare that things are hard or they do make a mistake. TAG kids get to college and experience their first failures and don’t know how to handle it.  They have no experience navigating failure.  They think if they fail they are bad at it, then abandon it.  Kids need practice handling failure/mistakes. Also, TAG kids get told they are smart a lot, and that kind of praise is detrimental to kids.)

How is this program different than traditional math classes?

Traditional math relies heavily on computation and memorization skills that leave many students bored or behind. The math that Facets teaches our learners is going to help them build skills across different concepts and build confidence in themselves.

What is the time commitment?

The Facets Learning program is run in 12 week sessions with lessons twice a week for one hour via virtual meeting. There’s no commute time to worry about, and sessions are offered several times a day to fit into a variety of schedules.

How does my student progress through your program?

Each session focuses on a specific set of skills. There’s no right or wrong order to complete the different sessions as each skill is widely applicable in many areas of math study. We will give each new learner a pre screening tools to determine the best placement to start building new and strong math skills.

Is this a virtual or in-person program?

At this time, Facets Learning sessions are only available online. We work to make the groups social and a true peer learning experience.

What time of day are the virtual sessions offered?

Virtual sessions are held 2 days a week at varied days and times. Please contact Facets Learning at hello@facets-learning.com to learn about upcoming sessions, days and times.
